Abbeydorney Abbey

Aka Monastery of Kyrie Eleison

Traveling from Tralee up to Rattoo Monastery to visit the round tower we came across Abbeydorney Abbey. The Abbey was founded in 1154 as a daughter house to the Cistercian Abbey at Monasteranenagh in County Limerick. All that remains is the 15th century Church and some cloistral ruins. The church is in a very dangerous condition and completely fenced off with no access to the public. The monastery was dissolved in 1537 and at present the grounds are used as a local cemetery. Owing to the condition of the buildings we would not recommend a visit to this site.

Situated: From Tralee head north on the R556 to Abbeydorney. Go straight through the village. You will see the abbey in the fields on your right.
