Cashel

Cairn

I came across this site by chance. On my way to Aghagower monastic site I noticed a sign with "Cashel Cairns" painted on it. I turned back and drove slowly along the road until I spotted this cairn. I took these shots from the road and left the cows in peace. There is a ringfort and two enclosures in the vicinity but this is the only burial mound in Cashel. MacPhilbin's castle is further down this road. The St Patrick's Heritage Trail from Balla to Croagh Patrick also crosses this road.

Situated: From Castlebar head southwest on the N5 for 5.6 kilometres. Then take a left turn for Cashel/Aghagower. The cairn is about 4 kilometres down here on your right.
