Glannagalt / Gleann na nGealt Standing Stone Gleann-na-nGealt (Irish) is called the Valley of the Mad or Glen of the Lunatics, for centuries it was believed that the two wells situated in the Valley provided a cure for mental illness. This standing stone is situated on marshy farmland, about two hundred and fifty metres south west of Tobernagalt/Tobar na nGealt or Well of the Lunatics.
There are 468 standing stones in County Kerry, only one of these is situated in Glannagalt townland. The stone stands 2.2 metres high and about 1.5 metres wide at the base, and tapers from the bottom to the top. It is aligned along the flat side in a NNE-SSW direction and is leaning toward to west. As you can see from the images José was joined by one of the locals on his visit. In the field to the north of the well is a ring fort and a bullaun stone, known as Cloghnagalt/Cloch na nGealt (Stone of the Lunatic). |
