Haroldstown

Portal Tomb

One of the first Portal tombs I uploaded to the web site is the fabulous tomb at Acaun Bridge. Haroldstown has always been regarded as one of the most attractive dolmens in Ireland. There are two overlapping capstones, the larger being almost 4 metres long, the smaller around 3 metres. The chamber consists of two portal stones with a large door stone and side stones. At 4 metres long and 3 metres wide the chamber is bigger than the average portal tomb chamber, indeed a family lived in the chamber during the 19th century. I hope to call back here soon to improve these old images

Situated: The Haroldstown Dolmen stands on the bank of the Dereen river at Acuan Bridge on the Tullow to Hacketstown Road.
