Craggagh

Killonaghan Medieval Church

I imagine this late 11th century church would have looked hugely impressive at the time it was constructed, but sadly this is no longer the case. As you approach the church from the graveyard you can clearly see a large opening in the north wall where I presume the original doorway was located. The most interesting feature of the church is the tall round headed window in the east gable. The narrow window slit is set in a beautifully splayed embrasure. The church was constructed of large limestone blocks, typical for the burren region. Reputedly St Ochon/Onchu founded the first church here in the late 6th/early 7th century.

Situated: From Blackhead head south on the R477. Go passed the Fanore Cravan Park. After three kilometres you will see the church ruin and graveyard on your left.
